Distinguished and Famous people from Port Pirie
🏉 Mark Bickley
Mark Bickley’s football began in Port Pirie with Solomontown. As a small child he arrived dressed to play well before his mother would let him take the field. A later trial with North Adelaide did not produce a place, so he returned home and won a Solomontown premiership and the Spencer Gulf league’s Madigan Medal in 1988. South Adelaide and the new Adelaide AFL team followed. He eventually captained the Crows’ 1997 and 1998 premiership sides and played 272 AFL games. The premiership photographs followed local junior football, an apprenticeship and an unsuccessful first trial in Adelaide.
🎭 Keith Michell
Keith Michell grew up at Warnertown, near Port Pirie, before studying in Adelaide and working briefly in ABC radio. Moving to England in 1949, he built a stage and screen career that included Shakespeare and a celebrated television portrayal of Henry VIII. The Six Wives of Henry VIII brought him a BAFTA award and made the Tudor king one of his best-known roles. Port Pirie named its theatre after him, preserving the regional connection in a place devoted to performance. His route from a small Mid-North community to British theatre and television was considerably longer than a change of costume.
